FAIRFIELD DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

March 2003

DOOLITTLE REUNION NEWS
FDA Board Member Cathi Jasso (Pac Cal Realty) has agreed to chair a committee to design and build a float for the Doolittle Reunion. Cathi writes: "If you haven't already heard, on Wednesday, April 16th, the City of Fairfield is hosting a parade for the Jimmy Doolittle Raiders and we have the honor of having it in Downtown Fairfield.

The FDA is putting together a float for this occasion. We would love to have your input or even better, your involvement. This is a great opportunity to show your support for the Community and Country. And because this is such an important event, any assistance or donations would be greatly appreciated! I have been asked to be in charge of the float, so if you would like to be involved or if you would be interested in making a donation to offset any costs, please call me. We are looking for any uniforms/ memorabilia from World War II or 1940s era. My office phone is 707-428-1105 or Bus/ Res # 426-6825 (message). I am also trying to encourage everyone to dress up his or her windows with Red-White & Blue or something appropriate in the 1940s era. Thank you so much for your time."

Cathi can also be reached via email at paccalcat@jccomp.com

Cliff Gordon is the Music Man!
For over thirty years, the Armijo High School band booster organization hosted the Northern California Band Review in April. Unfortunately, the booster program is in a rebuilding mode right now, and is unable to organize this important event.

Cliff Gordon (Gordon's Music and Sound) has picked up the gauntlet, and, with help from the FDA, will sponsor the event that will be attended by bands from Contra Costa county, Alameda county and Marin county, as well as several cities in Solano county. Bands will compete in marching band, concert band (at FCCA) and jazz band (courthouse lawn & steps)

There are several ways for you to help. The Band Review will provide trophies for 1st, 2nd, 3rd places in various categories, and is looking for businesses and individuals to donate funds for sponsorship of the trophies. Marshals are needed to help staff the barricades along the street performance/ judging area. The event program has room for advertisements, and these advertisements will help defray the cost of putting on the band review.

Cliff Gordon has always been a huge supporter of the music students in this community, giving generously of his time and money to promote school music programs. He has also worked hard for the benefit of the Fairfield Downtown Association providing sound amplification at no charge for many special events. He spent a great deal of time on the Board of Directors, with several years as Treasurer. This is a good opportunity to show your appreciation for everything Cliff has done to support Downtown and our young people. Call Cliff for more information about the band review- 422-0313.

Certified Farmers Market Returns

The Certified Farmers Market returns to downtown on Thursday, May 1st, from 4 to 8pm. As for the last two seasons, the market will be set up on Texas Street between Taylor and Madison Streets. Joan Taramasso has agreed to return as Market Manager. She's been traveling around recruiting new vendors, while some of our regulars will return. Look for those sensational Watsonville strawberries in May and the delicious watermelons in July and August.

Some changes have been made to the stall set up plan to widen the walkway between the vendors, making the market more accessible to those in wheel chairs or pushing strollers.

Musical entertainment will return each week from 5 to 7pm. At press time the following performers were scheduled:

?E May 1st- Fred McCarty
?E May 8th- Gerry Waggoner
?E May 15th- Diego Jameau
?E May 22nd- Earl Oliver
?E May 29th- John Kelly
?E June 5th- Garry Waggoner
?E June 12th- Fred McCarty
?E June 19th- John Kelly
?E June 26th- Diego Jameau

On July 3rd, our nine "Concerts in the Courtyard" at Fairfield Center for Creative Arts begin. These enhanced musical offerings run from 6 to 8pm. Scheduled to play are:

?E July 3rd- Souled Out
?E July 10th- Inner Soul
?E July 17th- Silver Spur
?E July 24th- Oscar Reynolds
?E July 31st- Hillbilly Buzzards
?E August 7th- The Contenders
?E August 14th- Aloha Fedora
?E August 21st- Kafe Rico
?E August 28th- Papa Joe & the Bouncers

Nancy Reynolds will return to the Market for 23 weeks of FREE arts and crafts projects for kids of all ages. Last year, parents and children alike enjoyed making kites, planting seeds, braiding leather bracelets and using plenty of glue, felt, foam and glitter! Each week will see a different project.

Remember- Downtown merchants are invited to have a FREE booth or information table at the market. FREE is a good thing, and promoting your business service at the market is a good practice. Please call the FDA office by Monday before the market so we can provide a canopy and table for you.

Downtown merchants are encouraged, begged, invited and cajoled to extend business hours until 8pm on Thursdays during market season. Please give the guests who come to the market an opportunity to see your business and what it has to offer.

Terms are three years, and board members are required to attend one board meeting per month and to serve on at least one of the standing committees and one of the promotions committees (Tomato Festival, Candy Festival, etc.) In addition, board members are asked to attend and/ or participate at City Council meetings or other occasions where they represent the district.

The City of Fairfield and the California Main Street program provide board training and networking opportunities.

If you are interested in serving your fellow merchants in this very important capacity, please contact board chairperson George Fernando- 426-2659 or call the FDA office- 422-0103.

Member & Employee Discounts

Are you willing to offer employees of FDA member businesses discounts or specials? For example, Dr. Mark Christensen offers 20% off vision services and The Daily Republic offers special advertising rates to businesses in the FDA. If you're willing to extend similar benefits, complete the form attached and fax it to the office (422-1256). We'll publish a list of the discounts in upcoming newsletters.

Newsletter Advertising
The Board of Directors has authorized advertisements in the monthly FDA newsletter. Business card- sized ads will cost $25, and need to be "camera-ready," or emailed so they can be inserted into a WORD document.

Associate Memberships
Financial institutions, insurance and investment agencies were exempt from the 1971 assessment district. Associate Memberships now allow those businesses to join the association and take an active role in the operations of the organization. Businesses pay $125 per year, while individuals and families pay $35 per year. This is a way for us to increase active participation from the community and add to the FDA operating funds.

Coming Events

61st Reunion of the Jimmy Doolittle Raiders coming Wednesday, April 16th, through Friday, April 18th.
The City of Fairfield with assistance from FDA will provide a parade to honor the Raiders. The parade will close Texas Street, Kentucky Street, and the immediately surrounding area from about 10am until immediately after the last entry has passed, at about 1:30am. The parade itself begins at noon. County workers and the County courthouse staff have been advised of the event and the impact on parking.

There are only fourteen Raiders living, and the youngest is 81 years old. Since the reunion chooses a different community each year, this may be our last chance to honor these heroes from World War II.

The festivities fall during Spring Break for most of Fairfield's students, so it's a great time for parents to bring their kids downtown for some living history. It's also a perfect time for downtown businesses to have specials to cater to our guests.

The parade will be "televised" internationally thanks to a real time link to the City of Fairfield's web site and Channel 26. In addition, Fox News and CNN will be covering the parade live AND the History Channel will cover the parade and other festivities as part of a documentary being prepared about the Raiders and their annual reunion.

SOLANO BICYCLE CLASSIC
Due to construction at the Solano County government site, the downtown route for the annual bicycle races has been shifted northward to Kentucky Street. Only two blocks of Texas Street, between Taylor and Jackson, will be affected with closure on Saturday and Sunday.

Rosanna's Bakery, Kitchen Tune-Up, M & K Travel Services, Hacienda Family Restaurant, Ling's Tailoring & Alterations and Mr. Bicycle have donated cash and/ or prizes to the race fund to offer special prizes called Primes ("preems") for individual laps in the downtown course.

If youOre interested in this kind of promotion for your business, call Rick Wood- 428-7481. Rick, by the way, is a downtown resident in addition to being a cycling fanatic.

The races bring lots of racers and spectators to the area. They have to eat, and they certainly get thirsty. Downtown restaurants are encouraged to offer race-day specials- maybe a special discount for anyone sporting bicycle race-wear (who but a serious bicyclist would wear that form-fitting lycra?), or a race bib with the rider's number imprinted on it.

Complete information regarding street closures and race schedules can be found at the Solano Bicycle Classic website- www.solanobicycleclassic.org.

TIPS FOR HANDLING STRESS
From the "Professional Development Newsletter "
1. Pause and assess- take a detached approach for just a few seconds so that you can figure out how best to go forward. If you are stressed about something you dread, think about the benefits outweighing the costs.

2. Expect and welcome mild waves of stress- if channeled properly, stress can be a motivating force. And if you try to stem the flow of adrenaline, you'll only add to the situation by stressing out about stressing out! So accept stress as a normal, energizing part of life.

3. Treat your stress dispassionately- try grading your stress. If you give your stress level a 3 (out of a scale of 1 to 10), then you can realize that in the big picture, this isn't so bad.
