BOARD ELECTIONS RESULTS
The ballots have been counted, and you have elected the following business owners to three year terms on the FDA Board of Directors:
Anthony Brantley- Brantley's Taekwondo
Gary Dyas- Community Home Lending
Cathi Jasso- Pacific California Realty
The new board members will be confirmed at the City Council meeting on September 3rd.


Quarterly Business Seminar
Thursday, Sept. 5th - 7:45 am ­ 9:00am
Fairfield Center for Creative Arts


Attend the quarterly business seminar and learn the latest information from Solano County regarding the Downtown County Government center. Kanon Artiche, Solano County Architect, will discuss the plans and timeline for completion of the county project. In addition, Tom Garcia, City of Fairfield Building Department, will discuss how small businesses can comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). A FREE Continental Breakfast will be served.


11th Annual Tomato Festival

The eleventh annual Tomato Festival drew nearly 25,000 visitors to Downtown on Saturday, August 10th. We had 45 varieties of Heirloom Tomatoes in Tomato Alley. There were 1,265 pounds of tomatoes for sampling and sale, grown by Tenbrink Family Farms. All but three cases of tomatoes were sold by the end of the day. Dan Giacalone took a case of tomatoes to use at Fusilli Ristorante! Volunteers staffed Tomato Alley and, though it was very hot (over 100 degrees), there were many people enjoying the Tomato sampling. Leatherby's Family Creamery brought Tomato Ice Cream and sold out! Other gourmet tomato products included "Just Like Grandma's" tomato jellies and jams, "The Country Baker" with tomato- based breads, "Wing Time" with sauces and marinades and "Gourmet Bistro" with flavored oils and dipping sauces. Barb's Deli and Korean BBQ & Noodle House ran Tomato Festival Specials and reported excellent sales for the day. Many Texas Street businesses reported good sales the day of the event. Many FDA Board and committee members assisted the day of the event. George Fernando (Redi-Office), Tony Brantley (Brantley's Taekwondo), Nino Giacalone (Fusilli Ristorante), Cathy Jasso (Pacific California Realty), Richard Lockwood (Touch of Faith), Gary Dyas (Community Home Lending), John Dutcher (Promotions Committee) and Rick Wood (Promotions Committee) worked shifts. Many of the board and committee members brought their families with them to assist. Their assistance was greatly appreciated. Scott Bizarre (Tattoo Works) was a first-time volunteer who was a great help with both Friday night set up and Saturday night clean up. In all, a group of about 50 volunteers worked the day of the event, including representatives from the Fairfield-Suisun Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and the Fairfield High School Leadership Group. Fundraisers for Fairfield Aquatic Club, Fairfield Host Lions Club, Armijo High School Band Boosters, Napa-Solano Girl Scouts and the FDA were also successful. The variety of musical entertainment appeared to go over well. Event guests particularly enjoyed the blues musicians. The Salsa band, Julio Brava Y Su Orquesta Salsabad, was very well received. There were still over 1000 people in attendance when the music ended. Response from the City Council was very good. Mayor MacMillan was particularly pleased with the variety of tomato-related products included in this year's festival. Your comments and suggestions for next year's event are encouraged. Candy Festival

The second annual Candy Festival and Fall Craft Fair will be held on Saturday, October 12th from 10am to 5pm. Plans include 150 feet of enclosed tent full of candy to taste and purchase. Silicon Valley Confections, Old Sacramento Candy Factory and Nob Hill Chocolates are among the companies coming to share their specialties with us. A local non-profit group will host an Olde Fashioned Ice Cream Social and local restaurants will be asked to advertise festival specials to encourage visitors to eat in downtown establishments.
There will be an inflatable slide, an obstacle course and other children's attractions. "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" will be shown in the theater at Fairfield Center for Creative Arts, and there will be kid's arts and crafts activities, including face painting and "candy" making. Entertainment for the event will include "Hurricane" Sam Rudin and his honk-tonk piano, Gordy, the Banjo-ologist and "Beedazzled Dogs." Also scheduled to perform is Owen Baker Flynn, a frequent performer at San Francisco's Pier 39. Musicians and the Whipper Snappers barbershop quartet from Napa will wander through the festival, turning the three blocks of Texas Street between Great Jones and Jackson into an outdoor ice cream parlor and candy shop. Reflector- coated trick or treat bags will be distributed to children at the festival to return for our new Halloween event. Merchants are invited to purchase advertising/ sponsorship space on the bags.


FDA Sponsors Safe Trick or Treat

Treats, sweets and a spooky good time are in store for the young goblins of Fairfield this Halloween. The Downtown streets of Fairfield will be transformed into a Safe Trick or Treat site on Thursday, October 31st, from 4pm to 7pm. Participating merchants will have tables set up outside their stores to distribute treats. Buzzards Roost Ranch will provide hayrides, and Mac Gruff the Crime Fighting Dog will stroll Texas Street to meet the ghosts and goblins. The Armijo High School Super Band will perform a "Spooky Halloween Concert" for all to enjoy, and the Fairfield Center for Creative Arts will feature its annual Haunted Theatre. Holiday Night of Lights Returns

Our third annual Holiday Night of Lights will be held Friday, December 6th 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Plans are being made now. Please help coordinate this kick off to the holiday shopping season. More shoppers visited downtown on this night last year than on any other. The Light Parade will return this year, and the very popular holiday Walk About Contest will be back.



Small Business Development Center Courses Announced

Entrepreneurial Training Program Benefits Proactive Business Owners and Operators
NxLeveL Entrepreneurial Training Program, an award-winning 10-week course, is once again offered to Solano and Napa business owners. DISNEY INSTITUTE - Brings Program on Managing for Creativity & Service to Vallejo

Disney Institute is bringing its renowned professional development program to Vallejo on September 18th. Sponsored locally by the Solano College Small Business Development Center and the Vallejo Business Assistance Coordinating Committee, the one-half day program will give local business professionals the chance to discover the business behind the magic that Walt Disney World Resort has created for millions of guests from around the world for more than 30 years. "With the popularity of our programs at the Walt Disney World Resort, we've had many requests to take programs out to communities across the country," says Larry Lynch, Director, Disney Institute. "In our unique on-the-road program 'The Disney Keys to Excellence,' participants will hear Disney success stories and get a glimpse of the successful management philosophies we employ every day at the Walt Disney World Resort." Community Services Announces Indoor Flea Market

Fairfield Community Services will host an indoor flea market and craft fair on Friday, September 27th, from 9am to 3pm, at the Fairfield Community Center, 1000 Kentucky Street. Vendor tables are still available at $20 for a 12-foot table. New and used items as well as handmade crafts will be offered, and sweets and treats will be for sale. FDA Meeting Schedule

The FDA Board meets the third Thursday of each month. Meetings start at 8:30 AM in the meeting room at the FDA office (1000 Texas St, Ste D) and adjourn promptly at 10:00 AM. These meetings are not limited to Board members. All FDA members are encouraged to attend and make their opinions, wants and needs known to the Board. The Promotions Committee meets the second and fourth Thursdays from 8:30am to 10am in the FDA conference room. Please participate in this committee and help plan the promotional events that bring visitors to your stores and businesses.
