Chamber Mixers Return to Downtown

Chamber Mixers Return to Downtown On Monday, October 15, 2001, the Fairfield Downtown Association and the Fairfield Center for Creative Arts will co-host a Chamber Mixer. The Chamber Ambassadors will provide a portable bar and will take care of liquor licensing and set-up. George Fernando (Redi Office Emporium), Cathi Jasso (Pac Cal Realty) and Mimi Weddington (Stamp Heaven) have volunteered to coordinate the event. One of them will contact you soon to reserve your space and request your donation of a door prize. If you are a Downtown Restaurant, please plan to bring samples of your cuisine to share. The Armijo High School Jazz Band will perform at 6pm.

SAVE THIS DATE. This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce the business community to your company. Encourage your employees to attend and meet their fellow Downtown-ers. The mixer begins at 5:30pm, and the cost is $5.00.

Candy Festival

Our inaugural Candy Festival and Fall Craft Fair will be held on Saturday, October 6th from 10am to 5pm. Plans include a 100 foot enclosed tent full of candy to taste and purchase. Silicon Valley Confections, Old Sacramento Candy Factory and Nob Hill Chocolates are among the companies coming to share their specialties with us. The Fairfield Firefighters Association and the Fairfield Police Officers Association will host an Olde Fashioned Ice Cream Social and a Hamburger and Hot Dog bbq to raise funds for the families of firefighters and police personnel lost in the New York attack. Our thanks to Joe's Buffet for coordinating this important part of the festival.

There will be an inflatable slide, an obstacle course and other children's attractions. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factorî will be shown in the theater at Fairfield Center for Creative Arts, and there will be kid's arts and crafts activities, including face painting and candy making.

Cathi Jasso (Pac Cal Realty) has arranged entertainment, including a juggling unicyclist, magicians and a yo-yo expert. Just Gotta Dance studio in Suisun City will perform The Candy Man, and Carole Warren's Danc-Sing Studio dancers will also perform. Musicians will wander through the festival, turning the two blocks of Texas Street between Great Jones and Madison into an outdoor ice cream parlor and candy shop. The Whipper Snappers barbershop quartet from Napa will entertain the crowd at 2pm.

Holiday Night of Lights Returns

Our second annual Holiday Night of Lights will be held Friday, November 30th from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Plans are being made now. Please help coordinate this kick off to the holiday shopping season. More shoppers visited downtown on this night last year than on any other. The Light Parade will return this year, and the very popular holiday Walk About Contest will be back. Mark your calendar and join us for our planning session: Wednesday, October 10th at 9am at Carter's House of BBQ, 532A Jackson Street.

Fairfielddowntown.com

Steve Garson, of Garson Design Services reports that our new website is complete. Currently, the site includes pages for each Downtown event and a directory of Downtown businesses. The newsletter will be posted, and information about membership in the Association can also be found there. Opportunities for linking your own website to the FDA site are available, and Steve also offers a significant discount to Downtown merchants who want to develop a website. You can reach Steve at 428-1743.

Merchant Spotlight
Amar Groceries opened in April at 1107 Texas St, the former home of Don's TV. The store carries a vast assortment of Indian and Fijian music, movies clothing, folding beds and treats. You can also find turbans, Asian groceries and spices of all kinds. Try a Maaza mango fruit drink, a product of India.

The store was originally located on West Texas Street, but larger space was needed. Since moving to the new site, business has increased, largely due to the improved foot traffic.

Sue Violette Joins FDA Staff
Sue Violette has joined the FDA staff as a part time Event Planner. Sue is a Fairfield resident and enjoys shopping downtown. You will undoubtedly meet Sue as she coordinates the final details for the Candy Festival or helps to plan Holiday Night of Lights.

Just a thought...

We have roughly 250 members in the Fairfield Downtown Association. If each member took responsibility for recruiting one volunteer for each event (the member, an employee, a relative, a friend etc), weıd have a wonderful volunteer base! We have a Promotions Committee of eight people, but we need lots of volunteers to make our events successful. Each of us knows lots of people who might be willing to give a couple of hours to help with an event. They may just be waiting for an invitation.
