Residents gear up to honor veterans

By Ian Thompson

FAIRFIELD - Yoshiko “Yo” Muto and Henry Maeyama are this year's Veterans Day parade grand marshals, honoring the wartime sacrifices of Japanese-Americans in helping win World War II.

Both will be leading this year's Veterans Day parade on Friday in downtown Fairfield.

Muto was born in Venice, Calif., and met her husband Kazuo “Kaz” Muto, who was raised in the Suisun Valley, in the Gila River Concentration Camp after they were both interned there shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Kaz Muto volunteered to join the Army in 1943 and was shipped to Europe where he fought in Italy and France as part of the famous 442nd Regimental Combat Team.

The couple was married in Fairfield in 1945 and have lived in Suisun Valley and Fairfield. Kaz Muto died in June 2003.

Maeyama, a 1941 graduate of Armijo High School, joined the Army in 1944 to be also sent to serve in the 442nd RCT before returning home to farm in Suisun Valley.

The activities will start at 10 a.m. in the Fairfield Center for the Creative Arts at 1035 Texas St. with a patriotic musical program by the Solano Choral Society and the Alive Music Orchestra.

It will be followed by a Veterans Day ceremony in the same place. The guest speaker will be Lawrence Sandler, director of the Department of Veterans Affairs' Northern California Health Care System.

The city's Veterans Day parade will kick off at 12:30 p.m., starting at Webster Street and Kentucky Street before winding its way to Texas Street, where it will proceed through the downtown.

Nearly 100 entries will pass the reviewing stand this year, according to Fairfield Recreation Coordinator Todd Grames.

Fairfield's local marching bands will be joined by the University of California, Davis' Cal Aggie Marching Band-Uh. The Shriners will have their midget cars and the Oakland Police Precision Drill Team will make an appearance.

Neighboring Travis Air Force Base will be present with six marching groups and all of the other military services will be represented as well, according to Grames.

Horses, classic cars, the Wells Fargo Stage Coach and fire trucks will be joined by vintage military vehicles and equipment such as a World War II-era jeep, a Vietnam-era Huey helicopter and a Civil War-era artillery battery.

For more information about the event, call 428-7585.

In Vacaville, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Brotherhood of Vietnam Veterans are hosting their annual Veterans Day program and dinner starting at 6 p.m. at the Vacaville Veterans Memorial Building.

The Vacaville veterans are also looking for volunteers for their Thanksgiving community dinner to serve, help cook and deliver dinners to those who are unable to make it to the event. For more information, call 447-6354.
