Food, family and fun in Fairfield

By Ian Thompson

FAIRFIELD - The grand opening of the Solano County Government Center on April 9 kicks off this year's slate of events in downtown Fairfield with entertainment and food.

This is the first of several Fairfield Downtown Association events that include the Tomato Festival, an Evening of Wine and Chocolate, the Candy Festival, the Independence Day Parade and the Holiday Night of Lights.

The opening runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with school music groups from across the county performing in the Community Plaza. Food vendors will share the space with jugglers and street performers while residents tour the county facility at Union and Texas streets.

The Certified Farmers Market follows up on downtown Fairfield's calendar of events on May 5 by opening at its new location, the plaza in front of the government center.

The market will operate from 4 to 8 p.m. under a new manager, the Pacific Coast Farmers Market Association, and will offer its traditional fare of farm produce as well as new attractions such as live music, and children's arts and crafts.

Independence Day on July 4 will again be marked with a parade along downtown Texas Street which starts at 10 a.m. followed by a barbecue and live music on the Community Plaza.
The 14th Annual Tomato Festival will be back Aug. 13 with more than 100 varieties of locally grown tomatoes and an assortment of gourmet tomato products for tasting.

The popular tomato-eating contest, the tomato cooking contest and the "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" Film Festival will return along with free arts and crafts activities for the kids.

The West Coast Barbecue Championship will return to the tomato festival for its second year with the best barbecuers competing.

The Evening of Wine and Chocolate will return to the Fairfield Center for the Creative Arts Oct. 7 for its second year, pairing gourmet chocolates with select regional wines and hors d'oeuvres. Proceeds from the evening benefit the fund for public art in Fairfield.

Following only a day later on Oct. 8, the Candy Festival will take over Texas Street, filling its two pavilion booths with candy and chocolate vendors from across the state. Seven blocks of Texas Street will be filled with nearly 200 craft and commercial vendors as well as live music in the plaza and extensive children's activities.

Downtown merchants will put on their Downtown Trick or Treat from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 30 in conjunction with the Fairfield Center for the Creative Arts' Haunted House.

The year will wrap up with the Dec. 2 Holiday Night of Lights with Santa Claus arriving at 6 p.m. to light the community Christmas tree at its new location in the plaza.
